Goal
Setting for Personal Development
When you say “goal,” it
could mean a lot of things. Goals are supposed to define your destiny and your
journey shall be determined by your goals in life.
The Importance of Goal
Setting
Goal setting is the
practice of determining and drawing out an actual plan of action to achieve
something specific. Those who have no ambition may not feel that this is
necessary but those who understand how heavy and important it is to want for
things, will have another idea. Goal setting is important because:
·
It
gives you a definite path. Direction determines the destination and not
otherwise. You could be aiming for a different destination but if you heading
the opposite way, you will never get to where you are supposed to go. Goal setting
defines the path that you have to take, and it functions much like a map that
will direct your course.
·
It
organizes your thoughts. It makes everything seem scientific. You have a plan
that is composed of steps and it will guide you through the entire process.
·
It
signifies your claim. Writing down your goals makes it more definite. When it
is out there, you signify a stronger claim for it, and almost assume that it is
already yours.
·
It
keeps you in tune. This is important for times when you lose your way and you
need to find your way back. The goal is like a map that you can refer to,
anytime, and this is going to be helpful in so many different ways.
How to Set Goals
You may not know this
but there is a wrong and right way of setting goals and it follows this
process:
·
Determine
your lifetime goals: Lifetime goals will be bigger dreams that are truly
transformational. The goals that you have for your life will determine and
design the path and the shape that your life will take. An example of these
lifetime goals will be the goals that you will set to benefit your career, your
financial life, your family, your physical and mental well being, your
education and even your overall attitude about life.
·
Determine
your smaller goals: Smaller goals are not belittled for its size. You have to
realize the journey to the top is very long and it smaller goals will take you
there. The smaller goals can be grouped or labeled as: one-month plan,
six-month plan, one-year plan, and so forth. Te finality of these goals should
lead you to accomplishing bigger things.
