Making
a Great First Impression
In order to get the
attention of people, your first step must be to create a great first
impression. Doing so is not easy, not for everyone. Whatever activity or
situation you engage yourself in especially if it is your first time to meet
new people, make an effort to impress them and eventually gain their trust,
respect, and admiration for who you are and what you can do.
We normally make first
impressions with potential employers during a job interview or even when we
just started working for a company. Also, we make first impressions when
introduced to new faces and acquaintances. Businessmen make first impressions
with fellow businessmen in their business deals.
The saying that first
impressions do not last really depends on whether you leave that lasting
impression on a first meeting or not.
Be
Yourself
Being introduced to new
faces or meeting new people does feel awkward sometimes especially if that
person you are facing appears to be intimidating. You would normally feel
uneasy at first, but this you can always hide behind a pleasant façade. If you
show signs of discomfort during the meeting, you are also spreading that
feeling to the other party and it is definitely not a good way to leave a great
first impression. Rather, show a confident and relaxed gesture and expect the
same reaction.
Always remember to just
be yourself instead of pretending to be someone else you’re not. Being in a
pretense of a different person will put you in a rather risky situation in the
future when further interaction and exchange of communication happens. So, in
order to make first impressions truly last, simply be yourself.
Give
Out that Smile
A genuine smile is one
of your greatest tools to get that great first impression. Smile generously and
you will earn that positive impression from other people. A smiling individual
is always associated with being friendly and amiable. It gives the hint that
you can be easily approached. A smile takes away uneasiness and hesitation
especially on a first meeting. Always expect that you will give people the
worst impression of you with that unwanted frown. So, give out that smile and
make sure it is a genuine one!
Show
a Positive Demeanor
You can never go wrong
with having a great attitude. You will surely be a likeable individual if you
possess the desirable attitudes that people usually admire. Show signs of
courtesy in words and actions. Demonstrate the right body language as it
communicates more than words. Your non-verbal gestures are also your way of
showing confidence and eagerness in dealing with others.
Having a positive
demeanor also goes as far as being respectful of other individuals and acting
appropriately. When looking for a job, showing a professional demeanor is
always a sure way of leaving the employer with a great first impression. If you
are being introduced to new acquaintances, being casual and friendly in
approach can eventually make you win new friends.
